Art and Culture in Acropolis

Between the years of 1967 to 1995, several parishioners made painted and sgraffito ceramics with the seat left by Turkish coffee, forming a collection of 55 works, among these it is important to highlight a ceramic that portrays the founder of the Acropolis, Mr. Said Samán Farah. With no greater pretensions than to show its patrons the contemporary plastic works -paintings, drawings, sculptures, engravings and lithographs - in addition to the poems and thoughts of artists, intellectuals and personalities who have gathered at the Acropolis, Fuad Saman Zajur, its director and son of the founder has managed to gather a collection of more than three hundred works. This collection has been enriched with acquisitions from various collections of Mexican and foreign art. The first of the drawings that make up the collection and one of the most anecdotal was the one made by the Oaxacan teacher Rufino Tamayo in 1986. He was invited to leave a testimony of his visit to the Acropolis. The teacher gladly agreed and executed an ink drawing that represents one of his emblematic characters that also has a dedication to the Zacatecanos. When Olga realized the value of the piece that her husband was about to give away, she snatched it away and limited herself to writing down on it the legend "I, whatever Rufino says and the check was missing." Currently the collection has works by Julio Ruelas, Francisco Goitia, Rafael Coronel, Pedro Coronel, Manuel Felguérez, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Rufino Tamayo, Francisco Toledo, Sergio Hernández, Gustavo Montoya, Alfredo Zalce, Leonora Carrington, José Luis Cuevas, Roberto Matta. , Salvador Dalí and Miro among others. Two mural pieces by Zacatecan masters produced expressly for this space are striking. One by Alfonso López Monreal entitled The Memories of my People, the other by Rito Sampedro entitled Communicating Vessels.
